Panel/Workshop Descriptions

A Pot Full of Spring (Damietta):  For those of us who need tangible proof that winter doesn't last forever, join Damietta in putting together a pot full of hope and faith that the spring will come.  Bring a clean 8-12" pot and we will work together to capture a little promise of spring.  I will bring plastic and other wrapping materials so that you can get your full pot home safely.  A $5 donation to hlep defray the cost of materials would be appreciated.  Class limited to 12 people.  (Friday @ 4:00pm in Hospitality, Saturday @ 2:30 pm in Hospitality.)

Bardic Inspiration

Building Your Own Tarot Deck (David Alverson):

(Friday @ 4:00 pm in Foyer, Saturday @ 2:30 pm in Temple 4)

Children and the Tarot (Sharon Blasing):
(Saturday @ 4:00 pm in Foyer)

Circles (Thuri Calafia):  Circles is a new and innovative approach to Wiccan education and training.  Each Circles class level is a complete year-and-a-day course, with study orchestrated to harmonize with the cycles of the Earth.  All Circles course levels teach at once personal responsibility, freedom, and a deep connection to the Earth and Moon Tides, which, Thuri states, are the "heart and soul" of Wicca.  The Wheel of the Year format makes starting classes easy any time of year; once the foundation work of the Orientation and Basics lessons is completed the student simply "jumps on the Wheel" with the monthly lessons, and then continues, spiraling upward at her own pace.  Join Thuri Calafiea in a presentation of the Circles Dedicant level course -- essentially the Orientation class -- and find out why Cricles is the ideal course of study for solitares, teachers and groups.
(Saturday @ 1:00 pm in Ladies' Lounge)

Cleaning Out the Dirt Inside - Setting Aside Differences (David Chittenden):

Capitulation or forgiveness?  You've done everything you can think of to heal the rift - how do you move past it when nothing works?  Learn what you can do by confronting your own demons and acknowledging your part of the conflict. This is a three hour session.
(Sunday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm in Upstairs)

Bring whatever you want to work on and spend the evening getting to know each other or join us when you want a break from the drumming and dancing.
(Saturday @ 8:00 pm in Hospitality)

DIY Totemism (Lupa):
How many totem animal dictionaries can you fit on one shelf?  Chances are that no matter how many books on totemism you have, most of them follow the exact same formula, and teach you to rely on someone else's definitions (whether the author intended it or not).  However, the best information comes from your interactions with the totem yourself.  In this workshop, Lupa shows you how you can create better relationships with totems, including unusual totems such as extinct and domestic totems and how to write your own personal totem dictionary.
(Saturday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 1)

Dialogue with People of Other Faiths (Rhiannon Louve): Rhiannon Louve is the only Pagan in a group of students working together through a Theology Master's program at Marylhurst University.  One third of her group is Catholic, and other represented faiths include Russian Orthodox, Unitarian Universalism, Anglican, mainline Christianity, New Age, and Judaism.  How do such different people dialogue with one another, plan rituals together, and respectfully and authentically share a spiritual journey toward becoming pastoral care providers?  More importantly, how can other Pagans make use of these same tools in our own interactions outside the Pagan community?
(Sunday @ 11:30 am in Foyer)

(Sunday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 3)

GLBT Issues in the Community (Lord Wolf, KaTerra, Wayne):
What are the issues facing the Gay, the Lesbian, the Bi-Sexual and the Transgendered witch within the context of formal ritual and informal social gatherings?  Are these issues that face all minority members of the pagan community, or are there special issues to deal with?  How do we work or refuse to work with them?
(Saturday @ 4:00 pm in Temple 3)

(Friday @ 4:00 pm in Temple 4, Sunday at 1:00 pm in Foyer)

Inanna in Hymn and Myth (Michael Agee):
Inanna, Lady of Largest Heart, Queen of Heaven and Earth is goddess of deep transformation.  She is one of the earliest goddess we know in western culture, and Her worship arose along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and in the salt marshes beside the sea in forgotten Sumer, no known as Iraq.  Her powers and offices clearly show this most ancient origin.  We know Inanna from translated cuneiform tablets from Ur and Uruk, among other Sumerian cities, and from carved clay and stone beads bearing symbols and images of a great goddess unknown until recent archaeologly (1922-1934) uncovered this lost cradle of civilization.  Easier to know by far is Inanna's descendant, Ishtar or the Babylonians, and they share many powers, but it is Inanna, with Her most ancient lineage Who is the Undivided One, Lady of a Thousand Offices, Bring of the Me, which are the source of civilization of the peoples of the earth.
This workshop will be presented as an introduction to Inanna, Her lineage and history, powers, rituals, and most importantly, myths and praise hymns.  We will approach Her through the voice of Enheduanna, the first poet whose words are recorded in human history.  Enheduanna was the daughter or Sargon, the first great king of Sumer, and en-preistess of Nanna and Ningal the moon gaod and goddess.  Enheduanna was a lifelong personal devote of Inanna, and she brings to us an intesne, poetic, loving vision and insight into her goddess.  Blessed is the name of Inanna, and blessed Her en-priestess Enheduanna.  Please join us as we approach Inanna...
(Saturday @ 11:30 am in Temple 1)

Intro to Body Magic Taylor Ellwood):
This works is based on Taylor's life coaching practice, Imagining Reality.  We live in a body-phobic culture, which teaches us that the body is "dirty".  In this workshop, he will teach you how to get in touch with the consciousness of your own body, so that you can grow more comfortable with it.  You will learn how to contact the consciousness of your body, as well as how to create and work with a residual body image.  You will also learn breathing techniques and how different functions of the body (even those that are considered embarassing) can actually be used to create a healthy paradigm for how to live with your body.

(Sunday @ 10:00 am in Hospitality)

Names of Power (Thuri Calafia):
What's in a name?  Why do Pagans choose such . . .fantastical names?  So they really hold power?  Many say they do, including modern practitioners of the Craft.  Some choose a name, some receive their magical names from their Gods, covens, or teachers.  Some take on a new name at Dedication, some wait for their third degree, some keep the same name for years and years, while other folks seem to change their magickal names as often as they change their clothes.  Finally, some keep their magical names totally secret, and some share them with everyone, from trusted friends to casual acquaintances.  Still others have both a secret name and a "festival" name, which they share with all and sundry.  Join Thuri Calafia in a relaxing and enjoyable workshop, and learn the history of the nomenclature, why its so important, and how we tend to live up to our names.  The workshop will include a guided meditation for those seeking a name as well as several techniques for obtaining one, so that the earnest seeker may very well leave the workshop with a new name of power.

(Saturday @ 2:30 pm in Temple 1)

Paganism and the Social Fringes: A Thealogy/Theology of Inclusion (Rhiannon Wolf Louve):
Why does Paganism appeal so strongly to the social minorities in our culture?  In geek, sexual minority, and alternative lifestyle circles, Pagan faith is much more common than among the general populace.  Is this simply a case of social rebels seeking one another's company, or is there something inherent in modern Paganism that makes it more welcoming to those who feel rejected by mainstream social groups?  Perhaps Paganism's niche as a growing faith is in its power to include everyone.
(Saturday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 3)

Pagans in the Military (Lord Wolf & Vergil):
Technically, the military is required to honor our beliefs.  In practice, is it always that way?  What does the recent fight to allow pentacles on military grave markers say about this?  waht must we do to gain more acceptance?

Reiki as it Assists with Other Healing and Magickal Systems  (Durgama & Bill): Or, if you prefer, "The Secret, What the bleep and how it came to work for the grumpy."  Reiki is the healing life force that runs through every being.  Channeling Reiki can be used to enhance or boost almost everything you do.  Even as Tarot cards can be used for divination, spellwork, healing and meditation, so too can Reiki be called upon to assist in a multitiude of energy work endeavors.  Positive evergy theory like" The Secret" and "What the bleep" is an amazing way to change your life.  But what if you are steeped in grumpy negativity and not sure how to work around it?  Believe it or not, you can survive and do amazing things to get out of the negative spiral you may be in.
(Saturday @ 4:00 pm in Ladies' Lounge)

Reiki Overview (Durgama & Bill):
Many people know Reiki as a healing system, but Reiki can be a life changing energy that can make huge changes, or subtle rebalances in one's life, rather you're the healer or the receiver.  Reiki is one of the easiest healing systems to learn and use as it asks nothing but permission to flow through a healer.  It is a natural state of being that requires little from the healer, although the more a healer lends toward the energy, the more that can be accomplished.  However, Reiki does so much more.  Learn more about how Reiki works, and how it can change your life and help you deal with the clutter.

Runemal (Thuri Calafia): The traditional Norse runes have been around for centuries, and some believe they are among the forerunners of written language.  The ancients used run staves, bind runes, and rune spells for much more than just to divine the future or understand energy patterns as we moderns do.  No matter what they are used for, the runes hold great power and magic for understanding and change.  Come and learn how to use rune spells, bind runes, and runemal (the art of rune casting) to deepen your understanding of yourself and your spiritual Path.  Join Thuri Clafia for a thought-provoking and interactive workshop which will include a bit about the history of the runes, and much about how we can use these powerful symbols to enhance and empower our lives today.
(Sunday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 4)

Space/Time Sigil Workshop (Taylor Ellwood):
A sigil is a statement of desire, turned into a symbol, which a person uses to manifest that desire into reality.  I will briefly discuss the history and theory of sigils.  Then we will present two advanced sigil magic techniques as ways of working with space/time in a non-linear fashion with the purpose being to shape reality to one's will.  One technique shows people how to use multiple sigils representing multiple probabilities and how to connect the sigels together so that when one probability (sigil activates) occurs so too will the other probabliites (sigils) activate.  The second technique shows people how to use sigils in a web that can strengthen specific possibilities in one's life while cutting other unhealthy possibilities out of one's life.
(Saturday @ 11:30am in Temple 4)

Sun & Moon Conjoined, The Thelemic Calendar (Joseph Thiebes): This simple but important class covers in complete detail and graphical illustration the Thelemic Calendar from minutes to docosazenzicades, and holidays canonical & modern.  We will touch on the philosophical basis for the calendar, and how it is practically superior to the Gregorian and Julian calendars.  In the course of explaining all this, we will touch on a number of astronomical and astrological concepts including sidereal zodiac, tropical zodiac, precession of equinoxes, and more.
(Sunday @ 10:00 am in Temple 3)

Tapping the Sacred Inkwell (Mark Magill):
What inspires your most deeply spiritual and emotional expression?  How do you manifest these sacred feelings for Goddess or for God or for your Self?  In this workshop you will explore this expression through the writing of original poetry that springs from your own unique intuition as the truest and purest form of expression from your heart.  You will be using imagery and numerology from Tarot cards that are drawn as well as other arcane sources for inspiration and as keys to unlock the wisdom and feeling that we all inherently possess.  This workshop is for established poets and beginners alike.  You do not need Tarot experience to attend this workshop.  There will be plenty of decks provided as well as other resource materials to choose from.  You may, however, bring your own Tarot decks if you have them.  By the end of this workshop, you will have written 1 or 2 (or possibly more) sacred sonnets, ballads or other poems that you may use to enter the Bardic Circle Competition at this conference.
(Saturday @ 10:00 am in Foyer)

The Three "Worst" Cards in the Tarot (Sharon M. Blasing):

How does a reader present cards like "The Devil", "Death" or "The Tower" as an exciting, positive change in energy when they carry such preconcieved negative energy to most people?  ARe they necessarily a reason to tiptoe or hesitate during a reading?  Sharon will present some suggestions to increase the reader's (and the client's) comfort when these cards are presented.
(Saturday @ 11:30 pm in Foyer, Sunday @ 1:00 pm in Ladies' Lounge)

Traditional Folk Remedies with Northwest Plants (Patricia Combs):
Local sacred and healing plants in the Portland and Columbia Gorge areas.  I will be bringing some dried actual plant examples, handouts with pictures of common local plants, and our farm will be providing some free samples of salves and dried flowers for the people attending the workshop.  Included in the handout will be a bibliography of recommended books.
(Saturday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 2)

Training the Wild Dogma (Lupa):
Every religion goes through its growing pains, and the many religions under the "Pagan" umbrella are no exception.  As we grow as a community and as individual religious paths, one of the obstacles is that of "dogma".  We face the potential reality of cultural stagnation with ostracism of those who "just don't fit in", rigid standards of acceptable beliefs, and all the other things that many pagans dislike about organized religion.  I'll discuss some ideas on how to stay flexible through our years of growth, where potential problems are, and why the Devil is the cure for dogma.
(Sunday @ 10:00 am in Temple 1)

T
raveling Altars (KaTerra):
(Friday @ 4:00 pm in Temple 2)

(Saturday @ 1:00 pm in Temple 4)

Wealth Magic: Making Money Work for You (Taylor Ellwood & Lupa): A lot of pagans and occultists have the ingrained belief that poverty makes you virtuous, but we take a different tack.  In this workshop we'll talk about the poverty myth and the beliefs people have about money.  Then we'll discuss ways you can use magic to deal with these ingrained beliefs as well as providing resources you can use to start learning how to make money work for you.  Most importantly, we'll examine the role of individual choice and show that individual choice plays a larger role in how you handle your finances than many people would have you believe.
(Saturday @ 10:00 am in Ladies' Lounge)

Wicca (Thuri Calafia): Wicca, sometimes called the "Path of the Wise", is a path of balance.  Male and female are equal; qualities of each are seen as vital, life-affirming and positive, and this is reflected in our practices, which honor many Gods and Goddesses.  The natural cycles of earth and moon are marked and celebrated as the Wheel of the Year turns.  Wild places call out to us like a siren song, and we follow gladly, pushing our spirits to grow more deeply connected with our Gods and all of nature.  Join Thuri Calafia in an open discussion about the basic beliefs and practices of Wicca.  All levels and Paths welcome.
(Saturday @ 11:30 am in Ladies' Lounge)
